Gaff cutter day boat. 23’4" x 22’wl x 8’ x 3’ Somerset. £ 2500
Built by Miles of Poole in 1939 for Lord Lyle on the lines of the traditional Poole fishing boat. Long keel, transom stern with transom-hung rudder..Believed 1" teak below wl, pitch-pine above, carvel planked, all copper fastened to steamed oak timbers @ 6"c. 2 ton ext lead ballast keel, some int lead ballast pigs.
Shallow added wooden bilge keels allow her to sit upright on the beach. Teak laid fore deck and side decks with teak coamings around a large, deep cock-pit with pine boards forming a wide sole.
Engine beds well forward under fore end of the cock-pit, just aft of the mast step. engine removed but stern gear and prop still in place.
Gaff cutter rig on varnished mast stepped in a tabernacle on deck. Varnished boom with original roller reefing mechanism. S/s rigging with talurit ends.. Old mainsail, staysail and jib.
Many years in present ownership, latterly based in Cornwall. Useful ability to take the ground upright
A big, stable boat ideal for sheltered waters pottering. Appears essentially sound but in need of a new engine and general tidying up.. With some hard work she will make a good boat at very reasonable cost.
