Gaff Cutter ref 503
Restoration project 29'4” x 22'6”wl X 6'6” X 5'2” £1000
A Victorian plank on edge gaff cutter, long counter stern & clipper bow. Possibly built as a 2 1/2 Rater, believed designed by H. J. Dartnall & built by P. Jones in Gourock, Scotland in 1898. Carvel planked yellow pine topsides in narrow planks, pitch-pine bottom planking, teak sheer strake on grown oak frames with 2 steamed Canadian Rock Elm timbers between on an elm hog with oak stem, stern post & horn timbers ail fastened with yellow metal dumps into the grown frames & copper nails Into the steamed timbers turned over In the Scots fashion. The garboards have been replaced at some time In hardwood. A heavy beam shelf has preserved the sheer. The deck Is laid in Kauri pine, much of it original, on oak deck beams. Long iron external ballast keel. No rig or engine. The interior is empty. In recent times, the yacht was fitted with a plywood cabin top, now removed. leaving a large aperture In the deck. Typically, she would originally have had a small cock-pit with an entrance hatch to the cabin & a traditional sky-light further forward.

The interior would accommodate 2 berths In the cabin in simple joinery.

The planking, frames & back-bone appears to be in remarkably sound condition. The pianking is burnt off to bare wood & sealed with oil. The seams are fairly tight but some refastening will undoubtedly be required & the garboards. which have shrunk back from the back-bone should be replaced. The deck will be replaced with new deck structures & cock-pit.

Research shows that she was on the Firth of Forth for many years. Latterly she lay in Poole where she was found by the present owner, recovered & conserved under covers. Her condition is now stable awaiting restoration. She will refit to be a stunning little yacht of her type.
